Oakfords Celebrated by "Friends of the Sisters"

In 2015 – the year the Pope declared as being dedicated to Consecrated Life – a group of 10 women in Bloemfontein, South Africa, were inspired to celebrate and commemorate Religious Life in a very special way.  They had either been taught by Religious women or recognised and appreciated the role that Religious Sisters have played in the Church and in the world. They themselves are teachers, nurses and professionals in various spheres of life. They are wives and mothers and they gathered together and called themselves ‘The Friends of the Sisters’. They recognised that priests are cared for by the Bishop in each Diocese but that women Religious are on their own and must find ways to support themselves.  Read about how they have recognized and given thanks to Religious Sisters since 2015 in the following article:

Villa Maria Comes to a Close

Villa Maria, a loved and treasured house, and home to many Sisters for forty years, has been sold and will be occupied by new owners from the beginning of November 2017.  Twelve Sisters, representing the Congregational Leadership and the Gauteng/Bloemfontein local community gathered at Villa Maria on 27 October 2017 for the final celebration of the Eucharist.

Sr. Alison Munro Receives Papal Award!

Archbishop Steven Brislin, Archbishop of Cape Town and SACBC President, with Sr Alison

On August 5, 2017, Sr Alison Munro received the Pro Ecclesia et Pontifice award at the end of a celebration of the Eucharist during the plenary session of the Southern African Catholic Bishops’ Conference (SACBC) in recognition of her work in the AIDS Office of the SACBC.

Oakfords Attend Los Angeles Religious Ed Congress

Sr. Gladys Echenique represented the Dominican Sisters of Oakford this year at the Los Angeles Religious Education Congress.  Sr. Gladys joined sisters from Mission San Jose and San Rafael to host a booth of Dominican Women Religious from the West Coast.  Sr. Gladys stated after the event, "It was a good experience to be able to be part of the body of Christ among fifty thousand people, especially at this hard time for our brothers and sisters who are refugees, immigrants, and the undocumented. All the liturgies were about these topics. The signs of our time!"



Oakfords Attend Closing of 800th Jubilee Year

Sr. Dagmar Fasel (German Area), Sr. Anneliese Schäpers (South African), and Sr. Jodi Cecilia Min (United States) represented the Dominican Sisters of Oakford at the closing of the 800th Jubilee of the Dominican Order in Rome, Italy, in January 2017.

The Master of the Order, Fr. Bruno Cadoré first opened the Jubilee of the 800th Anniversary of the Order at the Basilica of Santa Sabina, Rome, on November 7th, 2015.  The theme of the 800th Jubilee was “Sent to Preach the Gospel”, a recalling and a renewal of the mission of the Order entrusted to St. Dominic by the Church. The Jubilee year was a period to look back and examine the ways Dominicans have effectively carried out this mission and to examine ways it can continue into the future.  Throughout the Jubilee year, Dominican friars, sisters and laity held various events all over the world to celebrate.
