Detention Center Chaplains Gather for Training

Chaplains serving in six Homeland Security immigration detention centers recently gathered for their annual training meetings at the Notre Dame Retreat Center in Canandaigua, NY.  The group was comprised of staff members from Jesuit Refugee Service, USA and Church World Service – the groups partner to provide chaplains and religious service programs in detention centers throughout the United States.

Among the group were two Dominican Sisters (one was Sr. Lynn Allvin of the Oakford Dominicans), two Jesuit priests, a Lady of Victory Knoll Missionary Sister, a Franciscan Sister, a Catholic deacon, a Presbyterian Minister, a Pastor of the Reformed United Church of Christ, a Muslim and a 7th Day Adventist. It was a richly diverse group!

During the week of meetings, the chaplains had time to catch up with each other and share about the “highs and lows” of the past year of ministry.

Major topics for the week included:

  • The  Universality of Ethical Principles in the Abrahamic Religions
  • Development of Leadership Skills and Teamwork
  • Aspects of Accompaniment
  • Care of Hindu Detainees
  • Care of Buddhist Detainees
  • Religious Care Giving: Working with Special Populations and Addressing Trauma Using the Capacitar Method, with Patricia Cain

Mealtimes were filled with good conversation and continued sharing.  Several movies with immigration themes were offered in the evenings and a special trip across the border into Canada topped off the week as the group enjoyed a wonderful dinner in a restaurant that overlooked the Niagara Falls.

Hi Sr. Lynn,+
Sr. Jodi has done a great job on your ministry. I'm so glad that you are with our brothers.
We continually keep prayer going for you and your great work.
There are so many bills in the house and congress that we need to study. Or at least I know I need to do so. The Dream Act .... Immigration .... Health .... Family unification ... Food stamps and much much more. Please keep me up on Arizona & I'll do my part for California. Will Az have Catholic Lobby Day?
I certainly hope you will enjoy your up coming prison ministry training. Please let me know how that goes. Sr. Sue Reif, O.S.F. was asking about your ministry especially since you are in the Az. system. She is Director of Restorative Justice in the San Bernardino Diocese. She remembers meeting you and is inquiring for you. Thanks for all you do for our brothers in the pods! Abundant blessings, gabi xoxo
